-LAST TIME OUT FOR FSU

   -Frostburg State picked up an opening week victory over American International 21-7 last week at Bobcat Stadium in the first ever meeting between the two institutions. Senior RB Josh Maxwell would get the scoring going in the first quarter with a 40-yard TD run, giving the Bobcats a 7-0 advantage. Maxwell would have a day rushing the football in total, accounting for 125 yards on 20 carries. Redshirt Freshman WR Jordan Marcucci would pul in two TD receptions , one from two yards out in the second quarter and a 29 yarder in the 4th for the final FSU score. AIC would find the end zone in the 4th to make it 21-7, but the defense would hold strong for the Bobcats with three takeaways to keep the Yellow Jackets at bay. Redshirt Freshman S Wylan Harich would register two as well as junior CB AJ Felton with one. The Bobcats would accrue over 400 yards of total offense in the win.

-SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS

   -West Virginia State comes into action 1-0 on the young season, after a 29-6 win over the Shippensburg Raiders in their home opener last week. The Yellow Jackets would take a 10-6 lead into the locker room at the half, and the WVSU defense would keep the SU offense completely off the board, as their lone score would come from an 89-yard kickoff return. Junior QB Donovan Riddick struck for a rushing TD of seven yards, and threw a 44-yard passing TD in the second, for a 19-28 & 224 yard passing afternoon as well as a 38 yard rushing day on nine carries. The WVSU defense tallied 8 sacks in week one, which is tied for first in the country with Sioux Falls (SD). WVSU opened their season with a win for the first time since 2020 (a 38-13 win over WVWC in the spring).

-WEST VIRGINIA STATE HEAD COACH

   -John Pennington has been the Head Coach of WVSU for six years including the 2022 year, and has never had a losing season for the Yellow Jackets, with a lowest mark of 2-2 in the shortened 2020 season. Prior to taking over has HC in 2017, he had various roles within the organization as Offensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Offensive Line Coach and Quarterbacks Coach. He would make a brief appearance with Concord in 2011 until 2015.

-OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT

   -Eric Wagoner became the 14th Head Coach in FSU history to register a victory in program history since 1961.
-HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

   -Frostburg State packed 3,150 fans into Bobcat Stadium this past weekend, ranking FSU within the top 40 attendances in Division II at 33rd.

-WEEK ONE MEC HONORS

   -Wylan Harich, a sophomore S from Point of Rocks, Md., finished Thursday's game with two important interceptions as Frostburg State topped American International. His first interceptions of the game came in the first quarter on the FSU one-yard line, while his second came late in the fourth quarter with 5:40 remaining. He returned his fourth-quarter interception 53 yards to help seal the Bobcat win. Harich also chipped in a team-high six tackles.

-GETTING NOTICED EARLY

   -Frostburg State once again received votes in this weeks AFCA Top 25 Poll with 42, sitting behind Washburn (Kan.) with 56, Kutztown (Pa.) with 53, Minnesota State with 53 and Pittsburg State (Kan.) with 52.

   -FSU had a clean sweep at home in the 2021 season, going a perfect 5-0 in that span and have won their last nine home games dating back to the 2019 season, where they would drop a contest to then #6 Notre Dame College 35-13.
