Field Hockey Suffers Narrow First Loss Against Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo.- The Frostburg State field hockey team concluded their Missouri road trip with a close loss to the Lindenwood Lions 2-1 on Monday afternoon.

In the first period, the Lions came out strong with multiple shot opportunities, but the Bobcat defense held firm to keep the score at 0-0.

Lindenwood wasted no time in the second quarter, as inside two minutes they found the back of the net. FSU had a chance on a breakaway, but sophomore Macy Layfield's effort was saved with five minutes left in the period. The Lions were able to double their lead off a penalty corner with two minutes until halftime for a 2-0 advantage going into the break.

The third quarter played out much more even than the previous two, with Lindenwood taking the first couple shots before Frostburg recorded back-to-back shots of their own, though neither team was able to capitalize on their chances.

The Bobcats piled on the pressure in the fourth period, with sophomore Olivia Wenzel taking the first crack at goal just under three minutes into the quarter. The Lions responded with three shots of their own, but senior goalkeeper Madison Manalansan thwarted each attempt to keep FSU in the game. Wenzel and Layfield continued to fire in shots, and it would be a Layfield-to-Wenzel connection that led to Frostburg's goal, making the score 2-1. The Bobcats had two late attempts in their effort to get the game to overtime, but juniors Ashlyn Cave and Maddie Wallis were both denied the equalizer to end in a Lindenwood victory.

With the loss, FSU falls to 2-1 while the Lions rise to 1-0 on the season. Frostburg will be back in action on Friday, September 9 at 7 PM where they will take on Lincoln Memorial at home. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
