WEST LIBERTY, W. Va.– The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team tied with West Liberty 0-0 in their first road match of the 2022 regular season.
The first minutes of Sunday's game would be back-and-forth, with both teams pushing to gain possession and set the tone early in the game. The Bobcats would gain control first, having the first shot of the game in the ninth minute, as junior Alex Retzos' effort went high over the crossbar. Frostburg would get a chance to capitalize in the 15th minute as they were awarded their first and second corner kicks of the match, however both were successfully defended and cleared by the Hilltoppers out of their box. About midway through the first half, Retzos would once again let a shot off, this time blasting a long free kick off the crossbar. Fouls would fly back and forth in what proved to be a very chippy match. Sophomore Brennan Moore made his first save of the day to close out the first half, keeping the score tied at 0-0.
West Liberty came out firing in the early minutes of the second half, taking three shots in a row during the opening minutes. Moore and the Bobcat defense were able to hold off the offensive charge of the Hilltoppers and regain some momentum. FSU would look to break the game open in the 71st minute as freshman Anthony Ibarra battled to get a shot off, earning a corner kick for the Bobcats. It would be Retzos to take the corner, finding the head of freshman Carlos Quintero Rivas, but it was not enough to get past the Hilltopper keeper. WLU had a man sent off with just over 15 minutes remaining, giving Frostburg a man advantage, but neither side were able to find a winner by the final whistle.
Quintero Rivas had a team-high two shots on goal, with Moore making three saves in net to earn his first Frostburg clean sheet.Â
With the draw, FSU moves to 1-0-2 on the year, while the Hilltoppers now sit at 1-1-1. Make sure to watch the Bobcats on Wednesday, September 7 as they return home to host Alderson Broaddus for a 7:30PM kickoff. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
