Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Hofkamp, Defense Lead Field Hockey to Best Start Since 2009

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Frostburg State field hockey team traveled to Maryville on Sunday afternoon, where they earned a 2-0 victory for back-to-back shutout wins to begin the season.

In the first period, the Bobcats came out strong as junior Emilie Bonhivert, freshman Paige Leitzel, and senior Madison Hackett all saw their efforts saved by MU goaltender Liz Bierhals, but weren't able to find the breakthrough goal.

FSU didn't have to wait long in the second quarter for their lead, as sophomore Femke Hofkamp scored her first collegiate goal off a feed from junior Ashlyn Cave. Frostburg continued to pepper the Saints' cage with shots, but Bierhals stood firm and kept the deficit at 1-0 going into halftime.

The Bobcats continued their dominance in the second half, with Leitzel and sophomore Macy Layfield both seing a pair of efforts saved. Just before the period ended, FSU finally got some breathing room, as Hofkamp's shot from a corner deflected off of Bierhals, allowing sophomore Olivia Wenzel to find the back of the cage for a 2-0 lead.

Frostburg never gave Maryville a sniff at goal for the rest of the game, giving senior goalkeeper Madison Manalansan and the defense their second straight shutout. The Bobcats outshot the Saints 20-1, including a 13-1 advantage in shots on goal.

With the win, FSU rises to 2-0 while the Saints fall to 0-1 on the season. The two wins to begin the year are the best start to a season for the program since 2009, as the team has already tied its win total from last season. Frostburg will be back in action tomorrow, September, 5 at 12 PM as they finish up their trip to Missouri by taking on Lindenwood.
