Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Alonso, Fiocco-Mizer Lead Women's Soccer to Second Half Comeback

ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team capped off a two-goal comeback over Davis & Elkins on Sunday evening, scoring four unanswered goals to come away 4-2 winners.

FSU pressed the Senators from the start, winning multiple corner kicks in the opening few minutes of the game, but didn't manage to get a shot on target. Junior Ashley Bilger was the first keeper called into action, making a save on 14 minutes, followed up just a minute later with a save by D&E off a shot from junior Caroline Burton. Junior Hannah Thompson also tested Katie Clarke in the Senators' goal, but her effort was also saved.

Davis & Elkins made the Bobcats pay for not capitalizing on their possession, as Ella Schmidt swung in a corner kick that went all the way to the back post and straight in for a 1-0 lead. FSU had a great chance to even the score just three minutes later, as a foul in the box put Thompson at the penalty spot, but Clarke dove sharply to her right to make the save and keep D&E in the lead. That lead was doubled just under 30 minutes into the half, as a defensive mix-up allowed Alexa Karsel to finish into an empty net to go up 2-0.

Thompson made up for her earlier PK miss just a minute and a half later, as a loose ball in the box found its way to her and she got her shot past Clarke to give Frostburg a lifeline at 2-1. Both keepers made saves in the final 15 minutes to keep the score there going into halftime.

The Bobcats began the second half determined to find an equalizer, with Thompson forcing another save from Clarke and junior Lela Clark putting a pair of efforts just wide of the goal. Junior Toni Fiocco-Mizer finally got the goal FSU desired, as sophomore Mackenzie Alonso made a brilliant run behind the defense and fed Fiocco-Mizer for a tap-in to level the game at 2-2.

Thompson again tested Clarke with an effort that again was saved, then a minute later graduate Abbey Dennis saw a fantastic free kick effort just tipped over the bar from 30 yards out. On 55 minutes, Frostburg completed the comeback, as Fiocco-Mizer rose highest on a ball in the air at midfield, intelligently flicking the ball to an onrushing Alonso, who was too fast for the Senator defense and finished underneath Clarke for a 3-2 lead.

Davis & Elkins turned up their game, getting off three chances in an attempt to regain control, but Bilger and a pair of misguided efforts kept FSU in the lead. 63 minutes in, Fiocco-Mizer ran in behind the defense and curled a shot that seemed destined for the far corner, but it clanged back off the post, allowing Alonso to tap home for her second goal and a more comforting 4-2 lead.

Over the final 30 minutes, the Bobcat defense held strong, as Bilger made three important saves to run down the clock and finish the match with the victory.

Fiocco-Mizer finished with a goal and a pair of assists, while Alonso added a pair of goals and an assist of her own. Bilger played fantastic in the second half, as she finished the match with seven total saves of the nine shots on goal. FSU held a 19-13 advantage in total attempts, with a 12-9 edge in shots on goal.

With the win, Frostburg remains undefeated at 8-0 on the year, while D&E falls to 4-3. The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday, September 28 as they stay on the road to face West Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
