BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The 23rd-ranked Frostburg State Women's Soccer team continued their unbeaten winning streak with a 1-0 road victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday evening.
Â
FSU began the game with an early chance for junior Toni Fiocco-Mizer, but she fired her effort wide just under four minutes into the half. 10 minutes later, sophomore Carolyn DeSena had the first shot on target of the contest, but it was saved by Wesleyan keeper Ally Moore.
Â
Fiocco-Mizer and junior Hannah Thompson both had shots the missed their mark as Frostburg searched for the lead, but it would be WVWC to take the next effort, forcing junior keeper Ashley Bilger into a save with just under a half hour remaining in the half.
Â
Bilger then had to make another save with just under three minutes remaining, though Frostburg had the last chance of the half, as a Wesleyan handball in the box resulted in a penalty. Fiocco-Mizer stepped up and took a fearsome shot, but it cannoned off the right post and back out to take the game into halftime at 0-0.
Â
WVWC had the first chance of the second half, as Bilger had to range to her left to collect a goal-bound header off a corner. Five minutes later, Fiocco-Mizer and junior Dez Mortimer both tested Moore from range, but neither shot was able to cause too much trouble.
Â
Frostburg finally found the goal they desired, as Thompson intercepted a pass at midfield and passed to Mortimer, who played a delicious through ball to an onrushing DeSena to finish at the far post for a 1-0 lead on 61 minutes. FSU kept up the pressure with sophomore Keely Knotts firing a shot at Moore, but was denied.
Â
Both sides traded some shots later in the half, but nothing threatened Bilger or Moore heavily, as FSU ran down the clock for their ninth straight victory.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 9-0 on the year, while Wesleyan falls to 1-7-1. FSU is back in action on Saturday, October 1 as they return home to face Glenville State at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
