CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team traveled to take on No. 10 Charleston (WV) for a Wednesday evening game, falling 3-1 in a hard-fought game.
The Bobcats worked hard in the early minutes of the game to defend the challenge of the Charleston offense. UC would go ahead to take the first shots of the game, two of which would be saved by graduate goalkeeper Parker Shugars. The Bobcats would strike in the 14th minute of the game, taking a 1-0 lead off of a goal into the lower right corner by freshman Anthony Ibarra for his first collegiate goal. Charleston went on to answer just seven minutes later, finishing into the upper left of the goal. Frostburg would go onto take two more shots in the first half, both of which were saved by the Golden Eagles' goalkeeper, taking the game into halftime at 1-1.
The Bobcats would start the second half with an immediate shot on goal from Ibarra but his effort this time was saved. Shugars would make two excellent saves in the early minutes of the second half to keep the game tied at 1-1. FSU would find a second chance as freshman Kevin Garcia-Torres fired a low shot that was close, but again saved. Charleston would continue to challenge the Bobcat defense as the second half continued on, eventaully breaking the tie in the 69th minute with a goal to the lower left post of the goal. Frostburg looked to answer, trying to get something going on offense in the remaining minutes, but couldn't find any clear-cut chances. Charleston would ensure their win, converting on a penalty kick awarded in the 90th minute of the game, finishing 3-1 winners.
Shugars performed well in his first start of the year, ending the night with seven saves.
