WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team stayed atop the MEC North Division with a narrow 1-0 win over West Liberty on Wednesday evening.
Â
The game started out a defensive battle, as neither team was able to get a shot off until the 18-minute mark when FSU junior Lela Clark fired high. Clark again was the main threat just a couple minutes later, as she forced Hilltopper keeper Zara Wickert into a pair of saves.
Â
Junior Caroline Burton had the next effort on goal, but her shot was saved as well, followed up by another save on an attempt from sophomore Cat Smith. Junior Toni Fiocco-Mizer finally got the Bobcat breakthrough after a scramble in front of goal, where she was able to get her shot just over the line for a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Frostburg defense held WLU without a shot in the first half, as sophomore Keely Knotts and freshman Hannah Clagett both saw their shots saved inside the final five minutes to keep the lead at one into halftime.
Â
Just as the first half, the second period started out a defensive game, though it would be the Hilltoppers to get the first shot at goal, though the effort went wide. The Bobcats had a great chance to double their lead after being awarded a penalty on 66 minutes, but Fiocco-Mizer saw her shot saved by Wickert.
Â
Sophomore Keely Knotts, junior Hannah Thompson, and junior Dez Mortimer all came close to scoring, but the efforts by Knotts and Thompson were saved and Mortimer hit the crossbar. West Liberty had one late attempt with 20 seconds left to try and equalize, but junior Ashley Bilger was able to calmly collect to seal the 1-0 victory.
Â
FSU outshot WLU 16-2, with 10 shots on target to the Hilltoppers' one.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 5-0, while West Liberty falls to 2-2-1. The Bobcats return to action on Sunday, September 18 for a road contest against Notre Dame (Ohio) at 5 PM. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
