SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Frostburg State Women's Soccer pulled out a narrow, come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Notre Dame (Ohio) on the road Sunday afternoon.
Â
FSU started the game with the majority of possession, as they were able to pass around NDC but unable to create many scoring chances. With 25 minutes gone in the half, the Falcons were able to steal a goal, as a throw-in found its way to the far post and was finished past junior Ashley Bilger, the first goal conceded by the Bobcats this season.
Â
Frostburg picked up the pressure, but were only able to get away shots from distance that didn't trouble the Falcon goal to take the game into the half at 1-0 NDC.
Â
The second half opened with FSU taking immediate control, as within five minutes junior Lela Clark saw a point-blank shot saved and junior Toni Fiocco-Mizer had an effort agonizingly hit off the post. Junior Dez Mortimer would later have a great chance to equalize, but her effort was fired wide of the goal.
Â
The game turned on its head with 20 minutes remaining, as FSU finally got the goal they desired. Sophomore Mackenzie Alonso got the ball in a forward position, then played a brilliant through ball to sophomore Carolyn DeSena, who finished into the left side of the goal to tie things at 1-1.
Â
Frostburg found another goal just a minute and a half later, when junior Caroline Burton crossed the ball in from the far side of the field, and Fiocco-Mizer got just enough on her shot to kiss off the inside of the post for a stunning 2-1 lead.
Â
The Falcons had a couple late chances to try and even the score back up, but FSU's defense held strong to secure the team's sixth straight win, their best start to a season in program history.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 6-0, while Notre Dame falls to 2-3-1. The Bobcats return home on Wednesday, September 21 to face Fairmont State in another MEC North Division contest at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
