FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team swept Virginia Union at home in three sets, 25-23, 25-14 and 25-9.
The Lady Panthers opened up the match with five straight points before the Bobcats responded with a nine point run, taking a 10-6 lead. FSU then pushed the score to 13-7 on a kill from sophomore Madison Reed. VUU fought back to tie the game at 17-17 before a kill from junior Beverly Braun that was followed by a service ace from sophomore AJ Thompson. Virginia Union fought off two set points before Reed finished off the set with a kill at 25-23.
FSU took the momentum from the first set win into the second. The Bobcats put together three straight points on a Braun kill, a Thompson ace and a block from junior Hayley Delor. Frostburg then caught fire, taking nine out of the next eleven points, making the score 13-5. Thompson found a groove with two straight powerful kills, as the final kill of the set came from sophomore Fiona Gonzalez Medina for a 25-14 second set win.
The third set saw the Bobcats take a 9-1 lead as they looked to end the match quickly. The score stretched to 16-4 on a block from juniors Katie Keech and McKaily Thomson-Moran, as FSU ran away with the third winning by a score of 25-9.
The Bobcats were led by Braun with 20 kills while hitting .450 for the game. Delor had 35 assists to go along with 11 digs. Thomson-Moran had five blocks and Gonzalez Medina had 20 digs.
The win pushes FSU's record to 9-4 and the Panthers now stand at 3-3 on the season. Frostburg returns to action Friday, September 16 when they go on the road to face Felician at 6 PM. For more information please visit frostburgsports.com.
