Volleyball Reaches Double-Digit Wins with Victory Over Felician

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team moved into the double-digit win column on the year with a 3-0 sweep of Felician on the road Friday evening.

Set one began with the Bobcats in an early 6-3 hole, as FSU didn't register a kill until back-to-back swings from sophomore AJ Thompson and junior McKaily Thomson-Moran got the deficit to 6-5. Frostburg took their first lead on a kill from junior Beverly Braun at 8-7, which kickstarted a 10-5 run, highlighted by a trio of Thompson kills to go up 18-13. The Golden Falcons worked the score back to 20-17, but two straight kills from junior Katie Keech ended any hope of a Felician comeback, with freshman Joie Allen and Thompson getting kills before a Thompson-Keech combined block ended the set 25-18.

The second set was another slow start initially for FSU, though they were able to turn things around quicker by reversing a 3-1 deficit to a 6-3 lead thanks to Keech, Thompson, and sophomore Madison Reed. The Bobcats continued to push their lead to 11-4 with Keech contributing three points. Felician was able to get back within 14-10, but a Braun kill and ace capped a five-point run with the score at 19-10. The Golden Falcons made things interesting, winning six of the next seven points to cut the deficit to 20-16, but a Frostburg timeout by head coach Kylie Heyne settled the team. FSU took five of the next seven points, as senior Bianca Smalls ended the set with an ace to win 25-19.

Set three started the most even of the match, with the teams trading points to a 5-5 score. The Bobcats would be the first to swing momentum in their favor, as senior Edwyna Lainez had an all-round display with a kill, an assist, and a combined block with Thompson to help Frostburg to an 11-5 lead. FSU kept the pressure on as they looked to close out the match, going on a 7-3 run to push the score to 18-8. Felician put up one final push, earning seven of nine points to get within 22-16, but Braun was too much for the Golden Falcons to handle late on, getting the final two kills for a 25-16 set win and the match sweep.

Braun led the offense with a match-high 12 kills, as she joined Thomson-Moran (six kills, .750 hit pct.) and Thompson (seven kills, .500 hit pct.) in hitting at least .500 for the match. Sophomore Fiona Gonzalez Medina led the defensive effort with 16 kills, joined by Braun's 12 in double digits, as Keech added a match-high four blocks.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 10-4 on the year, while Felician falls to 1-11. The Bobcats have a quick turnaround, as they travel to Albany, N.Y. to face Roberts Wesleyan and Saint Rose tomorrow, September 17, with matches set to begin at 2 and 4 PM, respectively.
