INDIANA, Pa.- The Frostburg State women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Indianapolis and Indiana (Pa.) in the Crimson Hawk Classic on Saturday, losing 3-0 to both teams.
The Bobcats started hot against UIndy as they took the first three points thanks to a pair of miscues by the Greyhounds and an ace from junior Beverly Braun. After a kill by freshman Joie Allen to push the lead to 4-1, UIndy never looked back as they won seven of the next eight points to take an 8-5 lead. After trailing 17-10, Frostburg reeled off four straight points thanks to a kill from sophomore AJ Thompson and three UIndy errors. Thompson would strike again to bring it to within three at 18-15, but the Greyhounds would run away down the stretch and take the first set 25-20.
Braun would give the Bobcats an early lead with another ace in set two but was responded by four straight points by UIndy. Junior Katie Keech and Braun would hammer down two kills and take advantage of a miscue to bring the game to 9-8, but the Greyhounds would dominate the rest of the set to take a 2-0 advantage.
FSU would start in an early hole in set three as they trailed 5-1 before the Bobcats would get two freebies from UIndy. Freshman Amanda Knieper and senior Edwyna Lainez would put down kills to bring the Bobcats to within one at 8-9. The Grey Hounds reeled off a 10-0 run to end the match and take the final set 25-12.
Lainez led FSU with 10 assists and five digs, while sophomore Fiona Gonzalez Medina contributed a match-high 18 digs.
IUP started out the second match of the day by winning the first eight points and got FSU in an early hole. Sophomore Madison Reed was a bright spot in the set as she recorded two kills, with Frostburg falling the first set 25-13.
The second set was much closer, as kills from Thompson, sophomore McKaily Thomson-Moran, and Allen had the Bobcats within 6-7. After IUP went on 4-0 run, a smash by Allen and an ace by senior Bianca Smalls got Frostburg to within three at 8-11. After IUP went up 19-14, the Bobcats went on a run capped by a Thompson block to even the score at 20-20. IUP ran away with the game, however, with three consecutive kills by Brooke Little.
Frostburg gained momentum in the third set as they came out on a 7-1 run behind a pair of aces by Thompson and a block and kill by Braun. After IUP knotted it up at 10-10, Allen recorded a kill to put the Bobcats up in front 11-10. IUP went on a 5-0 run that was halted by a Braun kill and another ace from Thompson. Kills by Reed and Thomson-Moran down the stretch wasn't enough as they dropped the third set 25-18.
Delor led the offense with 23 assists and Gonzalez Medina recorded 11 digs defensively.
With the pair of losses, Frostburg drops to 8-4 on the year, as they will return to the court at home on Tuesday, September 13 agaisnt Virginia Union, with the match set to begin at 7 PM. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
