FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team hosted Wheeling under the lights for a Saturday evening game, narrowly losing 1-0 in a very rainy, hard-fought effort.
Both teams were forced to battle the elements as the rain came down, as neither side was able to create many meaningful chances in the opening minutes. The Bobcats fought off a couple of early set piece chances from the Cardinals after earning a pair of corner kicks, with sophomore Brennan Moore making a key save on the first corner. Moore once again made his presence known, coming out of the goal to punch away another Cardinal corner. The Bobcats would have their closest chance of the first half, challenging the goalkeeping of Wheeling on a free kick from the 30-yard line taken by junior Andre Tenorio. The remainder of the first half would be a back-and-forth battle between both teams, concluding with a 0-0 scoreline.
The Bobcats opened the second half with their best chance of the game, as junior Alex Grasso fired in a hard shot that deflected off the post, falling to the feet of junior Bryce Costello who found the back of the net but would be called offside on the effort. The rain would continue to have an impact on the game, giving both teams trouble controlling their touch and unable to get a footing. Moore came up clutch in the 66th minute, making a diving save to keep the game tied at zero as Wheeling put on the pressure. The Cardinals would go on to break the tie on a left foot blast from Diego Buenano placed into the bottom left corner in the 81st minute. FSU went on to fight until the last minute of the game, hounding the WU box, but weren't able to get a guilt-edged chance to end the match at 1-0.
With the loss, Frostburg moves to 2-1-2 on the year, while the Cardinals now sit at 2-2-1. Make sure to watch the Bobcats on Wednesday, September 14 as they return to action to host the Davis & Elkins Senators for a 7 PM kickoff. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
