FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State Field Hockey team took on the Wingate Bulldogs in a 4-0 shutout, giving the Bobcats their first win of the season.
In the first period, FSU looked strong, with senior Madison Manalansan making some great saves in goal. Frostburg picked up the pace and would strike first with a goal from junior Emilie Bonhivert after a nice run and setup from senior Madison Hackett.
In the second period, the Bobcats would come out strong once more with a solo goal from freshman Paige Leitzel to further extend the lead. The Bulldogs would create their share of chances, but Frostburg's defense and Manalansan would shut down Wingate's offense, as FSU took their 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the third period, Bonhivert scored her second goal of the match just four minutes into the period. A strong Bobcat defense would again hold off the Bulldogs and Bonhivert completed her hat-trick with five minutes left in the quarter for a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Manalanson and the FSU defense stood firm for the final 20 minutes, as they earned the team's first-ever shutout since joining Division II.
Bonhivert led the offense with her three goals, with Leitzel tacking on another, and sophomore Femke Hofkamp impressing with all three of her shots being on target. The win is the first time the team has won its home opener since 2016 and is the first time it has won its opening game of the season since 2014. The four-goal win is the team's largest margin of victory since earning the same scoreline against Hood in 2018.
With the win, Frostburg starts their season at 1-0, while Wingate now stands at 0-1. The Bobcats will next be on the road at Maryville on Sunday, September 4 at 1 PM. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
