Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Retzos, Caparotti the Difference in Men's Soccer's First Win of 2022

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated Seton Hill (Pa.) 2-1 in the first night game at Bobcat Stadium of the 2022 season.

The game started out fairly even in terms of chances, as the Griffins kept possession away from FSU but weren't able to generate any shots on target. The Bobcats, however, would get the first chance, as junior Alex Retzos took a free kick 25 yards out that was well-parried by the SHU keeper.

Frostburg sparked into life from that moment, as they were able to control possession, though were unable to create many clear-cut chances. Freshman Danny Caparotti had a breakaway chance with just under 10 minutes remaining, but his attempt was blocked by the recovering Seton Hill defense.

On the resulting corner, Retzos whipped a ball in that bounced in the box and hit a defender's hand, giving FSU a great chance to take the lead on a penalty kick. It would be Retzos to step up and bury the ball in the right side of the net to go up 1-0 with 37:54 on the clock. SHU picked up the pace in the final minutes, but the Frostburg defense stood firm and took their lead into the half.

The Bobcats wasted no time getting on the front foot in the second half on a three-on-two breakaway led by freshman Kevin Garcia-Torres, who played in Caparotti for a left-footed finish into the bottom right corner.

Seton Hill took the initiative for the next few minutes, and their persistence paid dividends with a goal off a corner to get back within 2-1. The Griffins almost tied the game just a few minutes later, but a free header off a corner was straight at sophomore keeper Brennan Moore.

Frostburg then had a chance to regain the two-goal advantage, with freshman Blake Hoskins and junior Bryce Costello on a breakaway, but Costello's ball was just ahead of Hoskins to go out for a goal kick.

Moore was called into action again with 14 minutes left, as he punched away a free kick attempt from just outside the 18. The rest of the match would remain a cagey affair, with the lone shot coming from FSU freshman Carlos Quintero Rivas, whose header was blocked before reaching the goal. Frostburg saw the final minutes out without much trouble to earn their first win of the season.

Retzos had a game-high three shots on goal in playing the full 90 minutes, with Moore also impressing with four saves.

With the win, FSU improves to 1-0-1, while SHU falls to 0-3. The Bobcats return to action on the road for an MEC contest at West Liberty on Sunday, September 4, with the match scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
