BECKLEY, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Baseball team lost to Concord in the second day of the MEC Tournament by a score of 10-4.
The Bobcats were the home team at Epling Stadium and sent sophomore Ben Vok to the mound for the start. The Mountain Lions struck first picking up a run in the first on a two out single. Vok faced the minimum in the second before running into trouble in the third. Vok gave way to junior Max Proctor who finished the third with Concord up 8-0 on the Bobcats.
Senior Josh Colliflower settled the Bobcats down coming in to pitch the fourth and came away with a clean inning. Junior Ethan Kiple gave FSU a little life with a leadoff first pitch home run over the left field wall for his 15th of the season. The Bobcats threatened again in the fifth with back-to-back doubles from junior Trevor Jones and senior Bryce Jackson that ended in a play at the plate with Jones being called out.
The Mountain Lions would add a run on a solo home run to left making the score 9-1. Senior Jack Lawrence sharply hit a ball to the right-center gap and was brought around by a junior Andrew Smith single that got by a diving second baseman. With the score 9-2, junior Jake McNellis worked through the seventh quickly sticking out two batters. In the bottom of the inning senior Nick Benitez would draw a walk and be knocked in by freshman Danny Estrada. He would then be brought around on a Jackson shot down the line to make the game 9-4.
The Bobcats were unable to put together a second comeback win in the final two innings. With the win, Concord improved to 33-17-1 and Frostburg State would fall to 33-16 with the loss.
Frostburg State will return to play Saturday May 13 at 3:30 PM when they will again face the Glenville State Pioneers, the team the defeated in opening round play 6-5 just a day ago. This time around it will be an elimination game and chance to advance to the final day of the MEC tournament on Sunday with a win.
