BECKLEY, W. Va. - The Frostburg State Baseball team secured their first-ever MEC Tournament victory in comeback fashion by beating Glenville State 6-5 on the opening day of play.
Things did not initially start in favor of the Bobcats, as the Pioneers were able to get three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Nick Trey would then get the call to stop the damage, as he responded by delivering five scoreless innings and five strikeouts, while FSU would get back into the game.Â
Senior Jack Lawrence would double home a run in the first to plate freshman Danny Estrada, who had led off the inning with a single for the Bobcats' first run of the game. Frostburg's next run would come courtesy of junior Ethan Kiple's 13th home run of the season, bringing FSU within a run at 3-2. GSU would strike for two more runs in the seventh, making their lead 5-2 heading into the final two innings of the game.
The Bobcat rally would begin in the bottom of the eighth, as senior Bryce Jackson hit a one-out double, followed by Kiple launching his second home run over the wall to score two runs and bring FSU within one at 5-4.
Redshirt-sophomore Jarek Bacon held Glenville scoreless in the top of the ninth, setting the stage for a wild end to the game. The bottom of the ninth would begin with sophomore Chase O'Dell getting aboard with a base hit. Sophomore Aidan Duda would find his way aboard via fielder's choice, as an error on the throw would allow O'Dell to advance to third. Freshman Ben Wieman dropped down a bunt to bring home O'Dell on a close play at the plate, tying the game at 5-5.Â
Junior Aronne Dutton would come on to pinch run for Duda, who was standing on second, and Estrada would step up to the plate with a chance to win it for FSU. Estrada dropped down a bunt to test an already-shaky GSU defense and it paid off, as Dutton reached third on the bunt and another untimely error at third by the Pioneers would allow him to jog home and score the winning run at 6-5.Â
Kiple led the offense with his pair of homers, as he was joined in the multi-hit column by Lawrence. Bacon earned his second win of the year by throwing 1.1 innings and a strikeout.Â
With the win, FSU improves to 33-15, and the loss sends Glenville to 31-16. Frostburg advances into the winners' bracket to take on the winner of Fairmont State vs Concord, with tomorrow's game set to start at 7 PM. For more information about the MEC Baseball Championships, visitÂ
