FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team took on West Virginia Wesleyan in dominating fashion, claiming the Thursday home victory 20-5.
In the first quarter, Frostburg would get off to a quick start with a goal from freshman Krissy Milburn, then got back-to-back goals from freshman Julia Badolato and junior Lilly Stephens for a quick 3-0 lead. After a Wesleyan turnover, graduate Lindsay Kohlmann got on the scoresheet, followed by a goal from freshman Kerri Hayes to push the lead to five. At the seven-minute mark, Kohlmann scored her second of the game, followed by goals from freshman Sarah Allgaier, junior Jordan Kenney, and two from graduate Stephanie King within four minutes of each other to give FSU a commanding 10-0 lead at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, sophomore Anna Kearney would continue the goal streak for Frostburg, along with sophomore Erin Bryce to make it 12 goals unanswered. Wesleyan would finally break the goal streak with a goal midway through the quarter. Shortly after, however, FSU would add another goal from Hayes off a free position shot and Stephens would get the last goal of the half on a man-up opportunity, giving Frostburg a 14-1 lead going into halftime.
In the third quarter, Milburn would get her second of the game just 30 seconds into the half. WVWC didn't lie down, as they scored back-to-back goals to get the score to 15-3. Frostburg responded through senior Lucy Baukhages, who scored her first two goals of the season to end the third in the lead 17-3.
In the fourth quarter, Frostburg would get off to another hot start with a goal from Stephens, but Wesleyan would be able to notch another goal with the score at 18-4. With the game in hand, FSU played with some freedom in the final minutes, as senior defenders Mackenzie Cramer and Chloee Johnson joined the offense and notched their first goals of the year. WVWC would get the last goal of the game, but Frostburg would come away with the victory 20-5.
Kohlmann, King, and Stephens all led the attack with three total points, while Kohlmann also had a fantastic all-round game, getting a game-high 10 draw controls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Grace Dickey earned her first win of her collegiate career in her first start, making four saves on the day.
With the win, Frostburg rises to 2-6 while Wesleyan falls to 2-6 on the season. FSU will be back in action at home on Sunday, April 10 at 1 PM where they will face Charleston (W.V.). For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
