Campbell, Lawrence Launch Home Runs in Baseball Loss to Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –  The Frostburg State Baseball team took on Millersville in a non-conference Atlantic region matchup, with the Marauders coming out on top at home 17-10.

MU started on the front foot, scoring a run in each of the first two innings as they held FSU without a baserunner. Things changed in the top of the third, as sophomore Hayden McLaughlin was hit by a pitch, then sophomore AJ Campbell stepped up and cranked a homer to left field to tie the game at 2-2.

The Bobcats kept momentum in their favor with a double from freshman Christian Shertzer, then back-to-back walks from freshman Danny Estrada and senior Bryce Jackson loaded the bases with no outs. MU worked two straight strikeouts and looked to get out of the inning, but junior Jack Maruskin came up clutch with a two-RBI double to take the lead 4-2.

Millersville stormed back in the fourth with seven runs, including a three-run home run to re-take the lead 9-4.

Frostburg got a run back in the fifth, with a single from junior Trevor Jones and a walk by junior Ethan Kiple followed by senior Nick Benitez getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. McLaughlin drove a ball into center field that scored Jones on a sac fly, but the damage was limited to bring the score to 9-5.

Millersville's offense took control from that point on, scoring four in the fifth and another in the sixth to take the score to 14-5. Campbell added another RBI to his day with a single to put the FSU total at six runs in the seventh, but once again the Marauder offense was too much with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Frostburg put some spoil on the party with a grand slam from senior Jack Lawrence in the top of the ninth, though MU would walk away winners 17-10.

Campbell was the lone Bobcat to record multiple hits, as he had three RBI to go with Lawrence's four, Maruskin's two, and McLaughlin's one.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 28-11 overall, while Millersville improves to 32-11. FSU returns to action Saturday, April 30 for a home doubleheader in a key MEC North Division matchup with Notre Dame (Ohio) with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
