FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Baseball team dropped a pair of home games to Notre Dame (Ohio), falling by scores of 13-6 and 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats got in an early hole in game one, as the Falcons scored an early run in the first, but FSU answered with a pair of doubles off the bats of freshman Danny Estrada and junior Ethan Kiple to even the score up at 1-1.
The NDC bats would explode in the top of the second, as they scored a whopping nine runs to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
Junior Andrew Smith scored on his lonesome in the bottom of the second, leading off with a double, then advancing to third on a passed ball and scoring on a wild pitch. Notre Dame responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third to go up 12-2.
Frostburg scraped across another couple runs in the third on an RBI single from Smith and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of senior Josh Netterville. Senior Bryce Jackson led off the fourth with a single and raced all the way around to score on a double from junior Trevor Jones to bring the score to 12-5. Netterville used his speed on the basepaths to cross the plate in the fifth, though that would be the final FSU run, as the Falcons scored once more in the seventh for the 13-6 win.
Kiple led the Bobcat offense with three hits and Smith contributed a pair of his own in the effort.
In game two, the bats stayed quiet as Frostburg could only muster two hits, one by Kiple and a double off the bat of freshman Christian Shertzer. On the mound, Kiple was solid in his start, as he tossed 5.2 innings, only allowing one run while fanning four. The Falcons scored a run in the second and four in the seventh, as that was all they required for the 5-0 win.
With the pair of losses, the Bobcats drop to 28-13 on the year and NDC improves to 22-22. Frostburg will be back in action tomorrow, March 1 at 1:00 p.m. as they take on the Falcons in another doubleheader at Bob Wells Field. For more information on Frostburg Sports, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
