ELKINS, W. Va.- The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team took on Davis & Elkins in the ECC-GMAC Challenge, where Frostburg won in a dominating 24-10 win.
In the first quarter, the Bobcats would get off to a strong start with a goal two minutes in from sophomore Austin Sipes. After a turnover from D&E, FSU would capitalize with a goal from junior Owen McCallum. A turnover caused by freshman Seamus Kearney would allow senior Jake Bowman to extend the Bobcat lead, followed quickly by a goal from senior Gavin Schattall. A faceoff win from freshman Alex Walstrum was picked up by junior Chase Buckwalter, who went down the field to score off a feed from junior Bubba Love. Schttall would add another goal to his column and senior Matt Ward would get the last goal of the quarter, giving the Bobcats a commanding 7-0 lead going into the second, as the defense forced the Senators into 13 turnovers and didn't allow a single shot in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Bowman would extend the lead, then a caused turnover from senior Jake Sprecher would allow freshman Dom Flora, Jr. to cap the scoring run at nine. The Senators would finally add a goal, but the Bobcats would answer right back on a man-up goal from Sipes. Love would get a goal of his own before D&E scored back-to-back goals to put the score at 11-3. Walstrum righted the ship with a faceoff win that would allow him to run down the field for a goal. The Bobcats would then take a commanding finish of the quarter with goals from Sipes, Ward, and senior Nicholas Nordhausen for a 15-3 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Love started affairs with two goals within two minutes to push the lead to 14. McCallum would add another goal to get the FSU goal streak to seven, though the Senators responded with three straight goals to end the third quarter with the Bobcats leading 18-6.
In the fourth quarter, Frostburg would get off to a quick start with a goal from sophomore Tyler Dooley, with D&E answering on a man-up goal. With the large lead, the Bobcats used the opportunity to give multiple players more time on the field, and were rewarded with a first career goal freshman Blaine Karotko. Shotly after, Sipes would add another goal to his column, as the sides traded goals, with FSU getting another goal from Nordhausen. Sophomore Erek Augustin would get his first goal of the season, along with junior Rob Tarver as FSU outscored D&E 4-3 in the final eight minutes for the 24-10 victory.
Sipes led the scoring with four goals, while Love added three goals and three assists and Ward tallied a game-high four assists. Kearney and Sprecher were fantastic on defense, combining for eight caused turnovers and seven groundballs. Walstrum was a force in the faceoff circle as he won 12 of 15 faceoffs to go with five groundballs and his goal.
With the win, the Bobcats rise to 6-6, while the Senators fall to 2-8 on the season. Frostburg will be back in action at home on Thursday, April 21 at 1 PM where they will face the District of Columbia in an ECC contest. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
