FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team took on Notre Dame (Ohio) in a thrilling 13-12 victory at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In the first quarter, the Bobcats would start off strong with a nice goal from freshman Julia Badolato, followed up by a goal by junior Lilly Stephens for a two-goal lead. The Falcons would be able to tie the game with back-to-back goals, but a turnover would allow Stephens to take the lead back for FSU. After a draw control win from graduate Stephanie King, fellow graduate Lindsay Kohlmann would score to bring it back to a two-goal lead. The Falcons would once again respond to tie, but a great goal from King would give the Bobcats the lead going into the second quarter, 5-4.
In the second quarter, the Bobcats would get off to a strong start with a nice goal from Stephens, though NDC went on a four-goal streak to take their first lead up 8-6. Stephens stopped the streak with a goal in the last two minutes, taking the score halftime with Notre Dame leading 8-7.
In the third quarter, he Bobcats would get off to a hot start with a free-position goal from King, followed by goals from freshmen Kerri Hayes and Krissy Milburn and another from Kohlmann to cap a five-goal run and regain the lead 11-8. The Falcons would be able to break the streak at the 9:34 mark, but Stephens responded off a free position shot to keep a three-goal lead for the Bobcats. NDC scored to end the quarter with the score at 12-10, leading to a tense fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, both teams played a cagey first six minutes, as it would be the Falcons would strike first with just under nine minutes to play. Just 40 seconds later, Hayes would add another goal to keep it a two-goal game. NDC scored again with 6:09 remaining to get back to a one-goal game, but some fantastic saves from freshman goalkeeper Nicole Gray would keep the Bobcats in the lead and secure the win 13-12 after a drama-filled final two minutes.
Stephens led the offense with her second straight five-goal game, while Milburn and Gray led the defense with three caused turnovers each, as Gray also picked up seven groundballs and made 11 important saves on the day.
With the win, Frostburg rises to 5-6 on the year, while the Falcons fall to 5-6. FSU will next be on the road to take on Belmont Abbey in Roanoke, Va. on Wednesday, April 20 at 7 PM. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
