ATHENS, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team traveled to Concord for a Friday afternoon double header, losing game one 3-4 and game two 3-5.
In game one, it would be sophomore Sydney Theobald to pitch for the Bobcats, as both sides struggled to get the bats going early with a scoreless first two innings. Freshman Kennedy Brumagin got things started in the top of the third inning with a lead-off double. Sophomore Sierra Sanderson successfully laid down a bunt, reaching base and advancing Brumagin to third. Both runners would proceed to cross the plate through smart baserunning, with Brumagin scoring on a throwing error as Sanderson stole second and went to third, eventually scoring on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead. Concord answered in the bottom of the third, scoring one run cutting the lead to 2-1, then would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead, leaving the score at 3-2 in their favor.
In the top of the sixth, Junior Bri Powell won her battle at the plate by earning a walk, allowing freshman Jamie Roberts to crank an RBI double, driving Powell across the plate to tie the game at 3-3. Game one went into extra innings to decide a winner, with Concord scoring a walk-off run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a final score of 4-3.
In game two of the afternoon, Roberts would step into the circle and threw a magnificent first three innings, not allowing a hit as both teams again were scoreless early on. Concord would be first to strike on two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, then tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the fifth to go up 5-0 going into the final inning of the game and the Frostburg offense struggled to find hits.
In the top of the seventh, FSU would look to make a late-game comeback, with Roberts opening the inning with a single down the left field line and was replaced with freshman Mackenzie Baker on the basepaths. Freshman Ryann Darling reached base on a fielder's choice as Baker safely made it to second, putting two runners on. Senior Ava Gnibus also reached on a fielder's choice, as Baker was thrown out at third. Sanderson stepped up as the final Bobcat hope, as she sent her first career home run over the fence in right-center field to keep FSU alive, though the comeback would fall short with the next out, ending the game with a final score of 5-3 Mountain Lions.
Friday's losses land the Bobcats at 19-12 on the season, while CU improves to 14-26. Frostburg will be back in action on Saturday, April 16 as they travel to play Glenville State in a doubleheader, with games set to start at 1 PM. For more news on the Bobcats visit https://frostburgsports.com/
