Roberts' Game Two Shutout Leads Softball to Split with Glenville

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Frostburg State softball team traveled to Glenville State on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader split with, losing game one 2-0 and winning game two 6-0.

In game one, sophomore Sydney Theobald would pitch for the Bobcats, throwing four strikeouts on the day, allowing seven hits and only one walk. The Bobcat bats struggled to get going early on in the game. The lone hit of the first inning for FSU would be a single to center field from freshman Jamie Roberts, who would be left on base at the conclusion of the first. The Pioneers would take an early lead by scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning making the score 1-0. Theobald concluded the bottom of the second inning striking out two Pioneers to keep the damage to a single run. In the top of the third, freshman Laura Gilford attempted to get the offense going with single and stealing second, but once again FSU would end the inning with a runner left on base.

In the top of the fourth, Roberts once again knocked a single through to center field and advanced to second, but was left on base to conclude the inning following two Frostburg outs. In the top of the fifth, senior Kennadie Batchelor would reach base on a single, then freshman Samara Funk entered the game as a pinch-hitter, knocking through a single to reach base and successfully advancing Batchelor to second. The Bobcats would end the inning with two strikeouts, leaving two runners stranded on base. Glenville State would go on to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring their second run of the game.

Roberts opened the top of the sixth for the Bobcats by drawing a walk, with senior Brianna Powell looking to get the bats going by knocking a single through to center field, advancing Roberts to second. Freshman Jayla Hill would add a single for the Bobcats as well, but the offense was unable to convert, leaving two runners stranded, with the game eventually ending with a final score of 2-0 Pioneers.

In game two, Roberts would be the pitcher for the Bobcats and held GSU's offense in check, as it wasn't until the fourth inning that the Bobcats would get on the scoreboard. Funk opened the inning by knocking a single to reach base. Powell would then reach on a fielder's choice, where the Pioneers would choose to grab an out from the lead runner. Powell showed her speed, stealing second and going on to score on a Hill single to right field for the first lead of the day at 1-0.

Roberts continued to dominate on the mound, allowing the offense to pick up again in the top of the sixth as Powell showed off her power, cranking a home run over the left field fence. In the top of the seventh, senior Ava Gnibus led off the inning with her first homer of the year over the left field fence to make the score 3-0. Gilford would reach base by knocking a single through to center field and advancing to second, eventually crossing the plate on a Roberts single. Roberts then advanced to third on an error by the GSU center fielder, as Funk would make an impact with an RBI triple to drive Roberts across the plate, making the score 5-0 Bobcats. Hill reached base on an error at shortstop, allowing Funk to score the final run of the game for FSU at 6-0.

Glenville State would fail to answer in the bottom of the seventh, as Roberts completed her fantastic performance in the circle with a complete-game shutout. She ended the day striking out two Pioneers, while giving up no walks for her fourth win of the year.

With the split, Frostburg moves to 20-13 on the season, while Glenville is now 12-21. The Bobcats will be back in action on Wednesday, April 20 as they host Fairmont State for a doubleheader match up with games starting at 2 PM. For more news on the Bobcats visit https://frostburgsports.com
