FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Baseball team swept a doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus on Monday afternoon at Bob Wells Field by the scores of 9-6 and 14-3.
In a quirk due to scheduling and weather conflicts, the games were played in Frostburg, though AB played as the home team, as they were scheduled to host the series before the weather cancellation.
The Bobcats scored all of their runs in the second and third inning of game one, highlighted by a two-run home run by senior Jack Lawrence and RBI singles by freshman Danny Estrada, senior Bryce Jackson, and junior Andrew Smith. FSU also took advantage of errors, passed balls, and walks by AB for some offense.
On the mound, Freshman southpaw Dean Wandell got the victory as he threw 3.1 innings in a relief appearance and struck out an impressive seven Battlers while only surrendering one run. Fellow freshman Jacob Stretch would come in and record his MEC-leading fifth save to secure the 9-6 win for the Bobcats.
Game two started off with a bang as junior Ethan Kiple would tattoo a ball over the fence in center field to give Frostburg an early 2-0 lead. After the Battlers scored one in the bottom of the first, the Bobcats would push five more across in the top of the second, as freshman Christian Shertzer, junior Jack Maruskin, Estrada, and Lawrence would each add an RBI to extend the lead to 7-1.
The bottom of the Frostburg lineup would come through in the fourth, as sophomores Chase O'Dell and Aidan Duda would each contribute RBI knocks to push the lead to 10-2.
O'Dell, Maruskin, and senior Josh Netterville would drive in three more for Frostburg in the sixth to give them a comfortable lead at 13-3. Sophomore Gaige Reighard would tally his first RBI of the year in the seventh as he laced a double to right center to put the cherry on top for the Bobcats.
Shertzer, Duda, O'Dell, Maruskin, and senior Nick Benitez all contributed hits in the winning effort.
On the mound, junior Will Grove had his normal dominant stuff, as he recorded his sixth win of the year, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and fanning five. Freshman Cael Huyer stayed hot as he worked 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out two, while junior Jake McNellis threw his first inning of the year and struck out a batter for the Bobcats.
With the victories, Frostburg moves to 21-7 and Alderson Broaddus drops to 3-23. Both teams will be back in action tomorrow, April 12 as they will play in another doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. For more information on Frostburg sports, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
