GREENSBURG, Pa.- The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team traveled to take on No. 20 Seton Hill (Pa.), where the Bobcats would come up just short in a 12-11 loss.
In the first quarter, the Griffins would start off strong with three straight goals. The Bobcats would answer back with a nice goal from junior Chase Buckwalter, but SHU scored two more goals to take them into the break on top 5-1.
In the second quarter, the Bobcats would start off strong with great goals from senior Jake Bowman and graduate Griffin Ocker, then a goal from senior Gavin Schattall brought FSU within one at 5-4. The Griffins would answer back right off the resulting faceoff, but junior Owen McCallum and senior Joey Boros scored back-to-back to tie the game at six all. SHU got their advantage back in the last five minutes, scoring three goals to go into halftime with the lead, 9-6.
In the third quarter, the Griffins got on the board first to increase the lead to four, as the Bobcats stopped the bleeding on junior Dominic Ceresini's first goal of the year. Both teams would play some great defense, with both teams going scoreless for seven minutes, as McCallum would notch the last goal of the quarter to bring Frostburg within two at 10-8.
In the fourth quarter, the Griffins again scored the first goal of the quarter to get back to a three goal lead. FSU responded with three straight goals, coming from junior Bubba Love redshirt-junior Tanner Donaldson, and Buckwalter to tie the game 11-11. SHU scored a minute and a half later to re-take the lead, as both sides struggled for offense the rest of the way. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Reuther came up with some fantastic saves in net down the stretch, but turnovers cost the Bobcat offense, giving the Griffins the victory, 12-11.
McCallum led the offense with three points, scoring the two goals to go with an assist, while senior Peter Karmilowicz had a game-high three caused turnovers defensively. Reuther was outstanding in goal, keeping Frostburg in the game with a season-high 20 saves.
With the loss, FSU falls to 3-5, while the Griffins rise to 6-4 on the season. The Bobcats will be back in action at home on Wednesday, April 6 at 7 PM, to take on Wheeling. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
