Women's Lacrosse Earns First Win Behind Defense, King's Four Goals

WILSON, N.C.- The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team traveled to take on Barton in their first victory of the season, winning 12-7 on Thursday evening.

In the first quarter, the Bobcats struck first with a free-position goal from graduate Stephanie King. On Frostburg's next possession, junior Lilly Stephens would get another goal to put FSU up by two. King would cap the quarter off another free-position shot, giving the Bobcats a 3-0 lead at the end of the first. The defense was strong to open, as BC had seven turnovers and just one shot on goal.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs got off a good start by scoring their first goal of the game. King would her third free-position goal to bring the lead back to three, then shortly after, junior Cameron Baldwin would get her own goal off a free-position shot to further extend the lead. Barton would score again, but the Bobcats would answer right back with a free-position goal from junior Cammie Schniedwind to give FSU a 6-2 lead going into halftime.

Frostburg started strong again in the third, as King tallied her fourth goal of the day off an assist from freshman Megan Keller. The Bulldogs would add another goal to get within four, but junior Jordan Kenney would get her first goal of the season just a minute later. Barton would get the last goal of the quarter, as both teams traded shots and saves, with FSU taking an 8-4 lead going into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, freshman Sarah Allgaier would get a goal off a free-position shot, followed by freshman Krissy Milburn getting the first goal of her young career to further extend the Bobcat lead. Barton scored once more to pull within five, but freshman Brittyn Leonard and sophomore Anna Kearney each scored to effectively put the game on ice at 12-5 with under five minutes remaining. The Bulldogs added two late goals, but it would not be enough, as the Bobcats get their first win of the season with a final score of 12-7.

King's four goals led all scorers, while senior Paige Bittner had a game-high two assists. Senior Bridget Weiss and freshman goalkeeper Nicole Gray led the defensive effort with each causing two turnovers and picking up a pair of groundballs. Gray added seven saves following her fine performance against Missouri Western earlier in the week. Milburn and graduate Lindsay Kohlmann came up big in winning draw controls, combining for 13 of FSU's 17 DC's, as BC only had five in the game.

With the win, the Bobcats rise to 1-5 while the Bulldogs fall to 5-5 on the season. Frostburg's next contest will be on the road in their MEC opener as they travel to Notre Dame (Oho) on Saturday, April 2 at 4 PM. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
