Women's Lacrosse Suffers Last-Minute Loss to Griffons

FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team took on Missouri Western State at home in a close game that fell short for the Bobcats, 11-10.

In the first quarter, the Griffons got on the board first, but the Bobcats would answer right back with a rocket shot from junior Cammie Schniedwind. The Griffons then got another goal off a free position shot, as FSU once again answered with a goal from sophomore Anna Kearney. The Bobcats would get another goal from junior Lilly Stephens before the Griffons responded to tie the game at the end of the quarter 3-3.

In the second quarter, graduate Stephanie King would get the scoring started for Frostburg, then junior Lilly Stephens scored either side of a Griffon goal for a 6-4 lead. MWSU would get two goals in the last minute of the half to tie the game back up at 6-6.

In the third quarter, both teams would play good defense, as the Bobcats would get the first strike with a nice goal from King, followed by a man-up opportunity that end in a goal for freshman Brittyn Leonard for an 8-6 lead. The Griffons would be able to come back though, and tie the game again at 8-8.

In the fourth quarter, MWSU would take the lead off a free position shot, but Frostburg answered with a man-down goal from Schniedwind. The Griffons took the lead again at 10-9, but FSU would be able to tie the game again on a free position shot from junior Cameron Baldwin with 1:06 remaining. MWSU, however, would be able to capitalize on a man-up opportunity to get the victory with 43 seconds left, as a late shot from King was saved to give the Griffons the win 11-10.

Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Gray was outstanding in net, making 11 saves, while senior Mackenzie Cramer led the defensive effort with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Stephens led the offense with three goals, while King and Schniedwind both added a pair of goals and an assist each.

With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 0-5 while the Griffons rise to 4-4 on the season. Frostburg will be back in action on the road to take on Barton College on Thursday, March 24 at 7 PM. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
