PHILLIPI, W. Va.- The Frostburg State women's basketball team travelled to Phillipi, W. Va. to face the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus University. A late surge from the Bobcats wasn't enough in a 79-72 loss.
In the first quarter, senior Morgan Dombroski started the Bobcats off with a nice layup. After a back and forth from both teams junior Maggie Sharp and sophomore Rhiana Hall had back-to-back scores in the paint to tie the game 13-13. Later, Sharp and Dombroski both knocked down three pointers giving the Bobcats a lead of 22-18 at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, after a slow start from both teams, Dombroski made a three pointer to get the Bobcats back on track. Junior Arianna Briggs-Hall tied the game at 29-29 on a layup for the Bobcats. Later in the game, Sharp would hit another three pointer along with a good jumper from Briggs-Hall. After a last second jumper from the Battlers, the Bobcats lead 40-35, at halftime.
In the third quarter, Briggs-Hall gets the scoring started for the Bobcats and stretches the lead to four. After some back and forth between both teams Dombroski hit a nice three pointer for the bobcats. Sophomore Semiya Esema scored in the paint followed by senior Shelby Funchess last second jumper to end the third. The Battlers go into the final quarter with the lead over the Bobcats 56-50.
In the fourth quarter, Sharp would get the first basket for the Bobcats. Hall would make a nice layup to make the score 67-55. Later in the game, Esema would lay the ball up narrowing the lead for the Battlers. After a back and forth, Hall would hit a three followed by a nice jumper from Esema to get the Battlers lead to seven points. Sharp would hit a late three followed by a last second layup from Dombroski to try and make a late comeback. In the end the Battlers would come away with the victory, 79-72.
Dombroski would lead the Bobcats in points with 15 and Esema would lead in rebounds with seven.
After the loss, the Bobcats fall to 5-18 while the Battlers rise to 10-11 on the season. The Bobcats next contest will be at home against the Falcons of Notre Dame (Ohio) on Saturday, February 12 at 2 PM. For more information and updates, visit
