Chapple's Shutout Highlights Softball's Saturday Sweep

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Frostburg State Softball team won both games played on Saturday in North Carolina, defeating Mars Hill 6-3 in game one and Chowan later in the day 6-0.

In the first game, the Bobcats struck early in the first inning when sophomore Katie Ernst drew a walk with the bases loaded to send senior Kennadie Batchelor across the plate. Sophomore Sydney Theobald then singled up the middle, scoring junior Brianna Powell to get a quick 2-0 lead. Frostburg would pick up another two runs in the third, first on a double from freshman Jamie Roberts to bring home Powell. Then freshman Cristina Sommerkamp added to the lead with a single to left, scoring Ernst.

The Mountain Lions would put together a solid fourth, scoring three runs to make it a one-run game. In the sixth inning, Powell would give the Bobcats a cushion on a two-run single to left. Frostburg would keep the score at 6-3, with freshman Katie Chapple closing out the last two and a third innings, picking up the save to go along with six strikeouts. The win would go to Theobald, who worked into the fifth inning for her first victory of the year.

In game number two, the Bobcats would do most of their damage in the third inning, putting five runs up on the board. Batchelor was able to knock in sophomore Ellie Buckheit to start things off before sophomore Sierra Sanderson also singled, scoring freshman Kennedy Brumagin. The next two runs would come on errors from Chowan, pushing the Frostburg lead to 4-0. Ernst would tack on one more run in the third when she knocked in freshman Jayla Hill on a double to the left center gap. In the sixth, Hill would crush FSU's first home run of the year, make the winning score 6-0. Chapple pitched a brilliant complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out eight.

The two wins on the day make the Bobcats' record 2-4 on the early season. Frostburg will face off with Chowan and Mars Hill again on Sunday at 11 AM and 1 PM, respectively. For more news on the Bobcats visit frostburgsports.com.
