WILSON, N.C.- The Frostburg State Baseball team swept their doubleheader against Chowan and Mid-Atlantic Christian on Friday afternoon by scores of 19-5 and 13-1.
In game one against Chowan, the Bobcats started the offensive onslaught in the top of the first inning as junior Trevor Jones drove in senior Bryce Jackson with an RBI single to give FSU an early 1-0 lead. After two more Bobcats reached base, Lawrence came to the plate and smoked a grand slam to left field as Frostburg pushed their lead to 5-0. Jackson added another run in the second inning on a balk, before Chowan got on the board with a three-run home run to close the lead to 6-3.
Frostburg would get right back to work in the fourth as Jackson launched a bomb out of the stadium and into the road in right field for a solo shot. Lawrence would then come to the plate again with the bases loaded and replicate his previous at-bat, as he hit another grand slam to push the Bobcat lead to 12-3. Sophomore Aidan Duda would bring home junior Aronne Dutton on a single, then freshman Danny Estrada would double to bring Duda home and increase the lead to 14-3.Â
The Bobcat bats would do some more damage in the sixth and seventh innings, as junior Ethan Kiple hit a two-run shot and redshirt-sophomore AJ Campbell followed up with a three-run bomb of his own to bury the Hawks with a final score of 19-5.Â
Lawrence's eight RBI in the game tied the program record for most RBI in a single game. On the mound, junior Jack Maruskin pitched four solid innings of two-hit ball, as he struck out six Chowan batters, which was good enough for the win. Junior Max Proctor relieved him in the 5th and pick up the save as he worked three innings, striking out five. Frostburg had seven players record at least two hits in the contest as they outhit the Hawks 19-7.Â
FSU kept the bats rolling into game two against Mid-Atlantic Christian as Campbell started the scoring with a sacrifice fly, scoring senior Josh Netterville to take the lead 1-0. Mid-Atlantic would answer in the top of the second as Alex Miller homered off of freshman starting pitcher Dean Wandell to even up the score. That turned out to be the only hit Wandell would allow in four innings, as he was stellar on the mound in his first collegiate start.
It was all Frostburg from that point on, as they would score in every remaining innning of the game. Netterville would join the fun as he doubled to right-center in the second, scoring freshmen Christian Shertzer and Ben Wieman to take back the lead. In the third, sophomore Chase O'Dell, senior Nick Benitez, Wieman, and Shertzer would each tally an RBI to push the Frostburg lead to 7-1.Â
Campbell cranked his second homer of the day in the fourth, as both him and Jackson would score to take the Bobcat lead to 9-1. Jackson would score again on a passed ball in the fifth to push Frostburg's total to 10. Netterville would strike again in the sixth, as he hit a line-drive into the right field gap to earn a stand-up triple, driving in two more Bobcat runs. Sophomore Stafford Allison slapped a pinch-hit single to score Netterville and cap off the explosion as Frostburg would go on to win 13-1.Â
Sophomore Nick Trey would enter the game on the bump for Wandell, as he pitched three innings of shutout baseball to record the save.Â
On the day, Frostburg would put up 32 total runs on 33 hits, including six home runs.Â
With the victories, the Bobcats move to 5-0 on the early season. Frostburg will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Chowan at 1 P.M. and Mid-Atlantic Christian at 4:00 P.M. in Historic Fleming Stadium. For information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.Â
