FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State women's basketball team hosted Wheeling at home on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Cardinals 73-57.

From the tip, the Bobcat offense struggled to find the basket early, but sophomore Niya Moore got the scoring started, knocking down a three-point shot off the catch. Junior Maggie Sharp entered the game for the Bobcats and made an immediate impact, knocking down her first three to bring the score to 13-8. Sophomore Samiya Esema closed out the first quarter by dropping in a layup, but WU responded with their own layup to bring the score to 15-10 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter opened with an 11-0 Cardinal run, taking the score to 26-10 midway through the second. Junior Ciara Thomas looked to fire up the Bobcat offense by laying in her first basket of the game to stop the run. Sharp entered the game and once again got free to knock down her second three-point shot, making her two for two from behind the arc. Senior Morgan Dombroski would close out the second quarter by knocking down a three of her own, bringing the final first half score to 37-24 Wheeling.

Dombroski opened the third quarter by knocking down her second three-pointer of the night. Junior Arianna Briggs-Hall made her mark in the third by converting on two layups and knocking down two free throws to bring the score to 47-34 Wheeling just over halfway through the third. Sophomore Rhiana Hall laid in her first basket of the afternoon to get in on the offense for the Bobcats, then Dombroski closed out the third by knocking down two free throws to get into double-digit scoring. The third quarter came to a close 60-38 in favor of the Cardinals.

Dombroski brought the spark to the offense in the fourth quarter by scoring nine of Frostburg's 19 points. Briggs-Hall showed her strength early in the quarter by powering through the Cardinal defense to get to the basket, bringing her total to 10 points. Dombroski then went on a run, knocking down three back-to-back shots, which included her third three of the day. Esema closed out the game by dropping in two layups and converting on an and-one opportunity. The game ended with a final score of 73-57 Wheeling.

Dombroski led the Bobcats with 19 points, followed by Briggs-Hall and Esema who had 10 points apiece. Esema led the team in rebounds with nine, followed by Senior Shelby Funchess who grabbed seven.

With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 5-20 on the year, while the Cardinals improve to 6-17. FSU returns to action on Wednesday, February 23 as they hit the road to take on Davis & Elkins for a 5:30 PM tip off. For information and updates, stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.
