Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Opens Season Against Anderson (SC)

ANDERSON, S.C.- The Frostburg State softball team dropped a Saturday afternoon doubleheader to Anderson(SC) by the scores of 8-0 and 8-2.

In the first game, the Trojans ace Laken Maxwell threw a no-hitter striking out 11 Bobcats in a shortened 5-inning game. Sophomore Katie Ernst and senior Kennadie Batchelor were the only players for Frostburg to reach base safely after drawing walks.

Sophomore Sydney Theobald started on the mound for the Bobcats. The Trojans jumped on her early with a homerun in the 1st inning and would continue to add runs in the third and fourth inning. She was relieved of her duties by freshman Jamie Roberts after 3.2 innings of work.

The second game started the same for the Trojans as Kayson Boatner belted her second, first inning homerun of the afternoon to give them the early 2-0 lead. Freshman pitcher Katie Chapple settled down after the first inning, as she blanked the Trojans in the second and third inning.

The Bobcats would get their offense started in the fourth inning when sophomore Brianna Powell legged out a single for her first hit of the year and then proceeded to steal second to get a runner in scoring position for Frostburg. Sophomore Sierra Sanderson laid down a perfectly executed bunt to reach base and then raced to second base on the throw setting up two runners in scoring position with no outs. Sophomore Ryan Darling then worked a walk to load the bases. Frostburg would finally get a run on the board after freshman Jayla Hill hit a flyball far enough to score the speedy Powell on a sacrifice fly. Freshman Mackenzie Baker would then ground out to score Sanderson and even the score up at 2-2. The scoring was halted as freshman Kennedy Brumagin grounded out to end the top half of the inning.

The Trojans would get after Chapple in the fourth and fifth inning for four runs to push their lead 6-2. The Bobcats couldn't push any more runs across the plate in the game as they fell 8-2. Batchelor and Sanderson recorded two hits each for the Bobcats in the losing effort.

With the losses, Frostburg drops to 0-2 on the year and Anderson(SC) jumps to an impressive 9-1. The Bobcats will be back in action tomorrow, February 13 against West Georgia and Lander in Greenwood, SC starting at 9:30 A.M. For more information and updates, visit frostburgsports.com.
