ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball lost their first road game of the season to Davis & Elkins by a final score of 88-75 on Tuesday evening.
Â
FSU started the game well on the defensive end, holding the Senators scoreless for the first two minutes, while junior MacKenzie Freeze scored an early layup and freshman Emilee Weakley knocked in a pair of free throws to take a 4-0 lead. Junior Rhiana Hall nailed a three, then Freeze tacked on a pair of triples and graduate Shelby Funchess made a layup to take the score to 15-11. D&E locked in defensively and held the Bobcats to just one point in three minutes and were able to take an 18-16 lead. Sophomore Harley Herndon finally broke the drought with a much-needed three, but Davis & Elkins responded with a pair of late layups to earn a 22-19 lead at the end of one.
Â
Freeze opened up the second period with a layup in the lane, but the Senators responded with an 11-3 run to get the largest lead of either team so far at 31-24. Frostburg continued to struggle from the field, as the offense couldn't seem to find the bottom of the net, as D&E grew the lead further to 42-29. Senior Maggie Sharp was able to provide a spark on a made three with just over two minutes remaining, as Funchess and Herndon combined for four points from the charity stripe late on to keep the score close at 42-36 going into the half.
Â
Sharp wasted no time trying to keep the offense going, bringing the Bobcats within three to start the third with a triple on FSU's first possession, but Davis & Elkins followed with a quick six points to get a comfortable 48-39 lead. Hall got an and-one to go down, with the resulting free throw bringing Frostburg within six, but still the buckets wouldn't fall for the Bobcats, giving D&E a 61-47 lead headed to the final quarter on a late made three.
Â
FSU caught fire early in the fourth in an attempt to get back into the contest, with Sharp knocking down another three and Hall swishing a jumper to get within 11. The Senators regained their focus and scored six straight, which helped them to weather another pair of triples by Sharp and Hall to bring things to 69-58 at the five-minute mark. Weakley joined both Hall and Sharp with shots from deep raining down, but the Bobcat defense wasn't able to get enough stops down the stretch, leading D&E to the final 88-75 scoreline.
Â
Sharp was the top performer on the day, putting in a game-high 21 points while tying her career-high with seven rebounds. Hall chipped in 18 points and a steal, while Weakley added a team-high three assists and two steals.
Â
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 2-3 on the year, while Davis & Elkins improves to 1-4. FSU returns to the court on Sunday, November 27 as they are back in Bobcat Arena to face Seton Hill at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
