FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team fell to Seton Hill by a score of 61-47 Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
The contest started slow as neither team could get a shot to go in the first three minutes. Junior Rhiana Hall broke the tie at the seven-minute mark as she converted on one out of two free throws. Senior Maggie Sharp and freshman Emilee Weakley would then convert on back-to-back jumpers to put the Bobcats up early 5-0. Back-to-back threes from the Griffins would give them their first lead of the game at 6-5. Frostburg would end the quarter with a pair of threes from Weakley and senior Ciara Thomas to give FSU the lead at the end of one, 11-10.
SHU would come into the second and go on a little 5-0 run but that was halted by a pull-up jumper by senior Ariana Briggs-Hall. After a back-and-forth quarter, the Griffins would take a 26-20 lead with 2:34 left. The Bobcat defense would stiffen, and graduate Shelby Funchess would bury back-to-back jumpers to get FSU within two points. Weakley would sink a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left to make the game tied at 26-26 going into the half.
The Griffins would erupt in the third as they went on a 12-0 run out of the gate and blew the game open three minutes in. Sharp would hit a much-needed three to bring the deficit back to single digits. Sharp and Briggs-Hall would handle the scoring for the rest of the quarter, as they teamed up to score all of the 12 points in the third for Frostburg, but they would trail 46-38 headed to the final frame.
Briggs-Hall would do all she could for the Bobcats as she scored back-to-back buckets to bring the deficit within seven, but SHU was too much down the stretch and prevailed with the victory, 61-47.
Briggs-Hall would lead Frostburg with 14 points and seven boards, while Sharp pitched in 13 points in the losing effort. Sophomore Harley Herndon was a bright spot off the bench as she dished out season-high four assists.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 2-4, while Seton Hill improves to 4-2 on the season. FSU will be back in action Wednesday, November 30 as they play host to West Virginia State in an MEC showdown at 5:30 p.m. For more information on Frostburg Athletics, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
