FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team pulled out a narrow victory at home Saturday afternoon against West Virginia Wesylean to secure their first conference victory of the season, 54-49.
FSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after freshman Emilee Weakley sank 1-2 from the free throw stripe and junior Rhiana Hall hit a smooth jumper for the early advantage. WVWC would then go on a dominant 13-4 run to end the quarter as Frostburg went cold from the field, taking Wesleyan into the quarter break with a 13-7 advantage.
Hall and Weakley would find fire in the second as they combined for 17 of the 19 points scored for FSU in the period. Weakley pitched in 12 points as she hit three highly-contested three-pointers and Hall dropped in five with a three of her own. Weakley nailed a three with a little over one minute left to play to give FSU a 26-24 lead going into halftime.
Weakley and junior Mackenzie Freeze came out of the locker room and hit back-to-back threes to give Frostburg their biggest lead of the game at six, two minutes into the quarter. Hall would go back to work as she was effective driving to the bucket and forced WVWC to foul, allowing her to knock down some free throws. She drove to the lane and got an easy one to fall, then converted on 3-4 free throws to give Frostburg a 40-33 lead entering the fourth.
After a Weakley runner in the lane for two, senior Arianna Briggs-Hall lit the Frostburg crowd on fire as she converted a tough and-1 to put FSU up 12 with nine minutes to play. WVWC would quiet the fans immediately as they busted out a 10-0 run and brought the deficit to two with 3:38 to play. After WVWCÂ got within one, Hall would convert on a tough layup after senior Ciara Thomas delivered a dime from halfcourt to get the Frostburg crowd back into it. Senior Maggie Sharp would hit clutch free throws down the stretch to put the game away and seal the victory by a score of 54-49.
Weakley was the catalyst once again for the Bobcats, as she tallied 24 points and 13 boards to go along with shooting 50% (4-8) from downtown, as she has gotten a double-double in all four of her games so far this season. Hall had a solid game as well, as she contributed 15 points and pulled down five rebounds.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 2-2 on the year and West Virginia Wesleyan drops to 0-2. FSU will be back in action Tuesday, November 22 at Davis & Elkins at 5:30 in their first road contest of the season. For more information on Frostburg Athletics, visit www.frostburgsports.com.Â
