FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team dropped a back-and-forth matchup to Lock Haven on Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena, losing 76-69.
The Bobcats came out in the first quarter and dominated the paint as they converted several layups and foul shots to take an early lead at 16-10. The early catalyst for the offense was freshman Emilee Weakley, as she tallied seven points in the first frame. Graduate Shelby Funchess shared the dominance in the paint as she recorded four points to go along with two rebounds.
Senior Arianna Briggs-Hall would assert her dominance in the second as she maneuvered herself around several Lock Haven defenders to convert a layup and the foul. She would then hit a pull up jumper to give Frostburg their largest lead so far at 23-17 with seven minutes left in the half. Weakley would get an easy layup and hit a highly-contested three to push the Bobcat lead to 28-21. Junior Rhiana Hall would find her touch late in the second as she hit two jumpers and gave FSU a comfortable nine point lead going into the half.
Briggs-Hall would pick up where she left off in the third, as she started the half with a jumper and a layup to extend the Bobcat lead to 38-27. LHU would catch fire, as they trimmed the deficit to three before junior Mackenzie Freeze would halt the run with a pure jumper from the baseline. Hall and Weakley would combine for the Bobcats' final six points of the quarter as they maintained a narrow lead at 50-46.
Things went downhill for Frostburg in the fourth quarter, as they shot 28% from the field compared to 46% from the Bald Eagles. After a layup by Briggs-Hall to go up 55-52, LHU would go on a run and never look back, as the Bobcats never regained the lead for the rest of the contest. Senior Maggie Sharp recorded all of her 11 points in the final five minutes of play with a pair of three-pointers and five free throws, but Lock Haven went a perfect 11-11 from the charity stripe to ice the game and pull away with the win, 76-69.
Weakley led the offensive charge once again for FSU as she tallied her third double-double of the year (23 points, 14 rebounds) and Briggs-Hall pitched in 12 points and five boards in the losing effort.
With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 1-2 and Lock Haven jumps to 1-2 on the short season. Frostburg will be back in action on Saturday, November 19 at 2 p.m. as they host West Virginia Wesleyan for their first MEC matchup of the season.
