BOWIE, Md. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team opened the season at the Bowie State Tip-Off Classic, falling to the hosts 94-79.
The first FSU points of the season came from senior Jason Murphy scoring in the paint, then did it again two possessions later to give the Bobcats their first lead of the game at 6-5. Bowie would build a small lead before back-to-back Frostburg buckets from senior Agyei Edwards got them within one at 13-12. FSU would build a small lead of their own after a fastbreak layup from junior Tairell Fletcher that was followed by a dunk from Murphy to make the score 18-13. The Bulldogs recovered and regained the lead, stretching it to eight with less than a minute to go before a late end of half spark from the Bobcats, as Edwards hit a shot to make the score 39-37 in favor of Bowie going into halftime.
BSU came out of the half and knocked down a three to start things off before graduate Bo Schene scored the first Bobcat points of the half on a layup, cutting the Bowie lead to 42-39. FSU would close in on the Bulldogs, with Edwards converting an old fashioned three-point play to make the score 48-46. Bowie would find their momentum soon after, running out to double digit leads twice in quick succession. Graduate Juston Bailey would hit a three near the 10-minute mark to cut the lead to 65-56. The Bulldogs would then push the lead out to as many as 24 points, shutting down the FSU offense and getting quick buckets. The Bobcats made a late run to try and make the game close, but BSU had already done the hard work in earning a 94-79 victory.
FSU was led by Edwards and Fletcher scoring 19 and 18 points, respectively. Edwards also had 10 rebounds to start the season with a double-double.
With the loss, Frostburg opens the year at 0-1, while Bowie stands at 1-0. The Bobcats return to play tomorrow, November 12 to face off against Fayetteville State for a 2 PM tipoff. For more information visit
