Men's Basketball Narrowly Falls to Fayetteville State

BOWIE, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team continued the Bowie State Tip-Off Classic with a loss to Fayetteville State by a score of 69-65.

The Bobcats opened up with a lead right away, as graduate Bo Schene nailed a three just nineteen seconds into the game. With five minutes gone in the first half, it was all systems go for Frostburg, as senior Agyei Edwards tucked in a layup to extend the Bobcat lead to 9-2. The Broncos were not content to go down without a fight, outscoring Frostburg 8-2 in a span of two minutes, started by a three-ball from Kaleb Coleman. With just over seven minutes to go, Tony Hauser would rest a layup into the bucket to tie the game at 20-20. With 4:05 to go until halftime, both sides had put 27 points on the board, and things started to tighten up. Fayetteville held Frostburg to just two points after that, a pair of free throws by Edwards, as the Broncos would head to the locker room leading 34-29.

Fayetteville came out in the second half ready to pick up right where they left off, as Marcus Elliott knocked down a three fifty-five seconds into the second frame. Edwards had the best attempt to rally the troops just forty-five seconds later with a fast break layup to cut the deficit to 37-31. The Broncos had other ideas though, as Elliott would strike again, burying his fifth three-pointer of the contest, extending the lead to 42-31 with 16:36 left to play. Both sides would trade blows back and forth for a majority of the second half, with Fayetteville holding a double-digit lead until the 3:49 mark. Edwards knocked down a three-ball to cut the deficit to 63-54, and the Bobcats would start to claw back. A layup by Edwards, followed by another three-piece from Schene would start a run of 12-1 from Frostburg. Schene would make it a one-point game with a pair of free throws late in the match, but the comeback would not prove to be enough, as Fayetteville escaped by a final of 69-65.

The Bobcats were led by Edwards and Schene, scoring 18 and 15 points, respectively. Senior Jason Murphy chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the year.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 0-2, while Fayetteville State improves to 1-1. The Bobcats return to play on Wednesday, November 16 in Shepherdstown, WV to take on Shepherd for a 7pm tip-off. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
