Women's Soccer Suffers First Setback of the Season at Concord

BECKLEY, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team suffered their first loss of the year in a 3-1 defeat on the road at Concord.

FSU began the game on the front foot, as juniors Toni Fiocco-Mizer and Caroline Burton both fired off shots within the first two minutes, but CU goalkeeper Leah Marsh made saves on both efforts. The Mountain Lions quickly responded, as they scored with their first shot of the game on the nine-minute mark for a quick 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats kept up their pressure, as sophomore Keely Knotts had a pair of attempts on goal, but Marsh was there again on both occasions to keep Concord in the lead. For the rest of the first half, each team found chances hard to come by, with Frostburg missing the target on the couple attempts they had to go into halftime still down 1-0.

Sophomore Carolyn DeSena opened the second half with a powerful shot that was saved again by Marsh, then just five minutes later CU found a second goal on a well-placed shot from outside the box. Junior Toni Fiocco-Mizer had a shot saved three minutes later, then finally found the back of the net in the 59th minute to give FSU a foothold in the match at 2-1.

Junior Hannah Thompson and Fiocco-Mizer both fired off several shots, but none were able to trouble Marsh, as the Mountain Lions eventually were able to get a third goal with less than 10 minutes remaining and held on for the 3-1 win.

The Bobcats out-shot Concord 17-9, with seven shots on goal to CU's five.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 10-1 on the year, while Concord improves to 6-4-1. FSU is back in action on Saturday, October 8 as they stay on the road to face Wheeling at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
