Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Defense, Fiocco-Mizer's Worldie Earn Women's Soccer Victory Over Fairmont

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team concluded their regular season with a narrow 1-0 win over Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon.

The Fighting Falcons came out on the front foot, with junior keeper Ashley Bilger forced into a save just two and a half minutes in. Another Fairmont shot went just wide of the post a few seconds later, with Frostburg forced into early defending. Sophomore Carolyn DeSena had the first shot for the Bobcats seven minutes in, followed up by junior Caroline Burton's effort 13 minutes later that was saved. The first half remained a defensive battle, with neither team managing a shot on goal for the rest of the half.

Frostburg shifted all the momentum onto their side to begin the second half, peppering the Falcons' goal with shot after shot in the first five minutes. Sophomore Mackenzie Alonso and DeSena both saw their efforts saved, while sophomore Mei Homman put too much on a shot that went high. 10 minutes into the half, junior Toni Fiocco-Mizer produced a moment of magic, as she received the ball at midfield, dribbled past three defenders and fired a 35-yard rocket into the goal for the 1-0 Bobcat lead.

Fiocco-Mizer nearly added a second goal six minutes later, but saw her goal-bound effort tipped over the bar. Homman, graduate Abbey Dennis, and freshman Skylar Ehart shut down Fairmont's offense, limiting them to just one shot that was off target for the rest of the game, allowing Bilger to keep yet another clean sheet on the year.

The victory clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the MEC for the Bobcats, as they finish the year with 43 points to South Division Champion West Virginia State's 41.

With the win, Frostburg ends the regular season at 16-1-1, while the Fighting Falcons drop to 10-3-4. The Bobcats will next be in action for the first round of the Mountain East Tournament, where they will face Wheeling at Bobcat Stadium on Tuesday, November 1. A time is yet to be announced, as updates and information will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
