FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team hosted the Wheeling Cardinals in the Mountain East Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening in a commanding 4-0 victory.
The Bobcats came out firing, testing Wheeling keeper Mikayla Yarwood early on, with junior Toni Fiocco-Mizer putting the first shot of the match on goal, though it was too close to Yarwood, who made the save. Fiocco-Mizer would strike again just one minute later, slotting her second shot of the night past Yarwood after running in behind the Cardinal defense for a 1-0 lead.Â
FSU's offense stayed determined and wreaked havoc on the Wheeling defense, with Fiocco-Mizer once again going on the attack, chipping Yarwood on a pass to herself and beating her defender to tap another goal into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead just 16 minutes in. Three minutes later, the Bobcats fired a ball towards goal that would be mishandled by Yarwood and fall to the feet of junior Dez Mortimer. Mortimer would quickly launch a shot which was well-saved by Yarwood, but the rebound fell right back to Mortimer, who would then convert, with the ball rocketing into the back of the net to push the lead to 3-0. Graduate Abbey Dennis and sophomores Mei Homman and Madi Allen all tried to get in on the scoring, but Yarwood stood tall to keep the deficit at three going into the half. Frostburg outshot the Cardinals 22-4 in the first half, with eight shots on goal to WU's one.
FSU looked to keep the momentum going in the second half, though it was the Cardinals that found the better early chances. Substitute sophomore keeper Katie Sterne came up huge on multiple occasions in the half, helping to keep the Frostburg clean sheet intact. The Bobcats shook off Wheeling's momentum and got back to peppering Yarwood's goal with shots, finally finding another breakthrough on 80 minutes. After a Dennis free kick from distance, FSU ran in behind WU's defense, to where freshman Hannah Clagett was all alone at the back post to finish for her first collegiate goal. The Bobcats once again outshot the Cardinals 9-7 in the second half, ending the match with a final score of 4-0.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 17-1-1 on the year and secures their spot in the Mountain East Conference Semifinals, while Wheeling ends their season at 6-12-1. The Bobcats will now face Charleston (WV) for a Friday, November 4 kickoff set for 4 PM at Bobcat Stadium in a rematch of the 2021 MEC Tournament Semifinal.
