INDIANA, Pa. – The Frostburg State field hockey team fell on the road to No. 8 IUP in the final minute of the game, with a final score of 3-2.
The game was a rematch of September 28, where FSU beat the then-seventh-ranked Crimson Hawks 3-0.Â
Â
Both teams had early scoring opportunities, with IUP taking the first shot of the game and senior Madison Manalansan coming up with a save. The Bobcats would take the ball down the field and earn the first corner of the game, setting up a shot from sophomore Macy Layfield that went just wide. In the tenth minute of the game, the Crimson Hawks scored the opening goal to take a 1-0 lead. IUP would carry the momentum from the goal through the remainder of the first quarter, with Manalansan came up big with two more saves to limit the damage going into the second.Â
Â
FSU would respond early in the second quarter when junior Maddie Wallis found freshman Paige Leitzel for the equalizing Bobcat goal. With the game tied at 1-1, Frostburg would continue to apply pressure through remainder of the quarter with three more shots on goal, but weren't able to take the lead at halftime.
IUP came out of the half ready to play, scoring their second goal of the game five minutes into the third period. FSU would be quick to answer, however, with a goal of their own minutes later. Junior Emillie Bonhivert would find Wallis, who tipped the ball to Layfield for her fourth goal of the year. Manalansan would add another save at the end of the third to keep the game tied at 2-2.
Â
The Bobcats would start the final quarter with an early corner, but weren't able to capitalize. Each team searched to break the game open and had several looks at goal, but neither side was able to find the cage. The Crimson Hawks would be the ones to take their opportunity when it came, scoring with less than a minute remaining to regain the lead at 3-2. Wallis and senior Emily Hughes both fired off late shots, but both went wide of the goal for the IUP victory.
Â
With the loss, the Bobcats are now 7-9 on the season, while the Crimson Hawks improve to 8-5. FSU returns to play against yet another ranked foe in No. 2 East Stroudsburg on the road Saturday, October 29 at 1 PM. For more information visitÂ
