FROSTBURG, MD- The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell to the second-ranked Shippensburg Raiders by the score of 5-1 on Saturday night at Bobcat Stadium.
The Raiders came out hot as they took a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game off a penalty corner. The Bobcats would not be phased, as two minutes later, sophomore Macy Layfield took a run down the right side and fed a beautiful ball to freshman Paige Leitzel, who then dished a perfect ball to the stick of sophomore Femke Hofkamp as she hit a laser into the back of the box to tie the game at 1-1. The rest of the quarter would be scoreless, as senior Madison Manalansan would keep Shippensburg quiet in goal.
SU would strike again early in the second, as a shot would slip by Manalansan on another corner for the Raiders to take back the lead 2-1. After some more close calls, Shippensburg launched a shot into the box, but it senior Madison Hackett made a brilliant defensive save. However, on the rebound off of Hackett, SU buried the ball in the back of the goal to push their lead to 3-1 going into the half.
Manalansan came to play in the third quarter, as the Raiders could not score on their multiple shot attempts. Frostburg had a couple chances by both Hofkamp and Leitzel, but both shots were saved by the Shippensburg keeper.
The Raiders would add two more in the fourth, as they were too much for the Bobcats down the stretch for the final 5-1 score.
Manalansan had an astounding nine saves in the losing effort, while Leitzel contributed three shots on top of her first assist of the season.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 7-8 on the year and Shippensburg climbs to 11-1. The Bobcats will be back in action Wednesday, October 26 at Indiana (PA.) starting at 7:00 P.M. For more information on Bobcat Athletics, visit
