MANSFIELD, Pa- The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell short Wednesday afternoon at the hands of No. 9-ranked Mansfield by a score of 4-2
.
The Mountaineers came out attacking as they fired three shots to begin the game, but all were impressively saved by the senior Bobcat goalie, Madison Manalansan. Frostburg failed to record a shot in the first quarter, as the game stayed scoreless after one.Â
After reeling off three shots to start the second quarter, Mansfield finally snuck one by Manalansan to take a 1-0 advantage after 24 minutes of play. FSU would answer right back, as senior Emily Hughes inserted a penalty corner to senior Madison Hackett, that was then kicked to freshman Paige Leitzel who found sophomore Olivia Wenzel as she hammered it home to even the game up at 1-1.Â
Mansfield would respond right back as they capitalized on a penalty corner with less than two minutes left in the half to go into the locker room with a 2-1 lead at the end of a frantic second period.
Frostburg would come out in the second half and smoke three shots on goal in the first six minutes, all by Leitzel. Sophomore Femke Hofkamp would follow up Leitzel's third effort that was saved and found the back of the goal to tie it up once again at 2-2, seven minutes into the third quarter.Â
No more than a minute after Hofkamp's goal, the Mountaineers worked a penalty corner to perfection and answered back to re-take the lead at 3-2. As the time ticked down in the final seconds of the third, Mansfield would add an insurance goal with five seconds left to push their lead to 4-2 after three quarters.Â
Sophomore Macy Layfield did everything in her power to try and get the Bobcats back in the game, but all four of her fourth quarter shots were saved and FSU would fall, 4-2.
Â
With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 7-7 on the season and Mansfield gets above .500 at 7-6. Frostburg will be back in action Saturday, October 22 as they take on second-ranked Shippensburg starting at 7:30 P.M from Bobcat Stadium. For more information on Bobcat Athletics, visitÂ
