Harpel Scores Last-Gasp Winner for Men's Soccer Against Battlers

PHILIPPI, W. Va. - The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team traveled to take on Alderson Broaddus for a Wednesday evening game, defeating the Battlers 2-1 in an intense match-up.

The Bobcats looked to test the AB goalkeeper early on in the match, firing off two quick shots on goal with both efforts being saved. Possession would go back and forth with each team exchanging shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Brennan Moore would do his job in goal, making a series of saves to keep the game tied at 0-0 in the early minutes of the match. Both teams would continue to find offensive chances but would fail to find the back of the net. Moore had an outstanding first half performance with 12 total saves and helping to keep FSU in the match going into halftime.

Alderson Broaddus would get on the board four minutes into the second half, making the score 1-0 as a result of a penalty kick against the Bobcats. Frostburg threw themselves at the Battlers' goal, earning back-to-back corner kicks in the 74th and 75th minutes to pile on the pressure. The FSU offense would finally pull through in the 76th minute, as they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, which was swung in by junior Alex Grasso and headed into the goal by sophomore Galo Cappelletti to tie the match at 1-1.

Once again, Moore would come up big for the Bobcats, making back-to-back saves to keep the game knotted at 1-1. Frostburg continued their renewed energy, refusing to back down to the Battlers. Each side traded counter-attacks late on in search of a winner, as FSU would be the ones to find it. Freshman Danny Caparotti made a surging run down the right wing and crossed into the box, where sophomore Zach Harpel was waiting at the back post to plant his header across goal for the dramatic 2-1 winner.

Moore capped off his man of the match performance with total 15 saves, the most in a single game in the MEC this season.

With the win, Frostburg moves to 4-7-5 on the year, while the Battlers fall to 2-11-2. Make sure to watch the Bobcats on Sunday, October 23 as they host No. 9 Charleston (WV) for a 1 PM kickoff, where it will also be FSU's senior day.
