FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State field hockey team took on No. 1-ranked West Chester in a 3-0 loss on Sunday evening.
WCU proved their mettle early, firing off a pair of shots inside five minutes, then forcing senior goalkeeper Madison Manalansan into a diving stop to keep the Golden Rams off the board. West Chester continued to push forward, with the FSU defense blocking back-to-back shots and Manalansan making another save in a heroic effort to keep the top team in the country scoreless throughout the first quarter.Â
Frostburg wasn't able to hold off the Golden Rams' charge for much longer, as just a minute into the second quarter, Manalansan was finally beaten with a shot at her right post that hit the cage. WCU doubled their lead seven minutes later, as a well-worked corner gave an open shot at the top of the circle for a 2-0 lead. A late Manalansan save took the sides into halftime with West Chester in the lead.Â
The Golden Rams put the result out of reach 30 seconds into the third period, scoring an early goal to go up 3-0. Manalansan and the Bobcat defense didn't give up the fight, as they were able to hold West Chester off the board the rest of the quarter, with the FSU GK making a trio of fine saves inside the final minute.Â
Frostburg found some forays into attack in the fourth quarter, as freshman Paige Leitzel and sophomore Macy Layfield made some great runs, but the final products couldn't trouble the Golden Rams' goal. Manalansan made another pair of saves in the final frame to tie her career-high of 10 saves, with WCU seeing out the rest of the game for their 3-0 victory.Â
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 7-6 while West Chester rises to 9-1 on the season. Frostburg will next be in action on the road at Mansfield on Wednesday, October 19 at 3 PM. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
