Volleyball Never Trails in Commanding Sweep Over Concord

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team swept Concord in convincing fashion at home on Friday night, as the Bobcats never trailed in the match.

Set one opened with a quick 5-1 FSU lead, as junior Beverly Braun planted a pair of kills, as did redshirt junior Hayley Delor, who also combined on a block with sophomore AJ Thompson. CU found their footing with three straight points, then hung around Frostburg for much of the set, never letting the Bobcats pull away up to 14-10. From that point, FSU put their foot on the pedal, scoring seven of nine points, with kills from Braun, freshman Joie Allen, junior McKaily Thomson-Moran, and an ace from Thompson for a 21-12 lead. Frostburg put the set away with four of the final six points, started by Thomson-Moran and finished with a pair of Allen kills to win 25-14.

FSU started out the second set exactly as they had in the first, with a 5-1 lead, this time with Braun putting one down, followed by back-to-back Thomson-Moran hammers. The Mountain Lions tied things up at 5-5 after a few Bobcat attack errors, but Frostburg quickly recovered with eight of the next ten points for a 13-7 lead, capped by an ace from junior Jenna Gossard. FSU didn't let up, scoring six of seven points on the backs of Braun and Thompson, while also featuring an ace by senior Bianca Smalls to go up 19-9. Concord didn't go down quietly, as they rattled off seven of the next nine points to get within 21-16. The Bobcats were able to regain control, however, with two straight kills from Thomson-Moran and Allen, an ace by sophomore Fiona Gonzalez Medina, and Braun finishing off the set with a power spike at 25-17.

Frostburg wasted no time polishing off the match with the first four points of set three, punctuated by a pair of aces from Smalls and kills by Braun and Thompson. The lead grew all the way out to 16-7, as freshman Amanda Knieper joined in on the action with a trio of kills. CU never got back into the set, as the Bobcats put down seven of the final nine points for the final 25-11 set win and the match victory.

Braun led all scorers with 15 kills, as Delor, Gonzalez Medina, and senior Edwyna Lainez combined to provide 40 assists. Gonzalez Medina also had a match-high 18 digs, joined in double figures by Gossard (12) and Smalls (10).

With the win, Frostburg improves to 15-10 on the year, while Concord falls to 6-19. The Bobcats return to Bobcat Arena for their next match on Tuesday, October 18 against Alderson Broaddus, set to begin at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
