Volleyball Sweeps Battlers in Dig Pink Game for Second Straight Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team earned their second straight victory with a sweep of Alderson Broaddus at home on Tuesday evening.

The match was FSU's Dig Pink game, which raises awareness and supports the fight against breast cancer, with October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Set one began with each team focused, as the sides went back-and-forth without many momentum swings up to a 10-10 score. The Bobcats were first to strike, with kills from junior Beverly Braun and freshman Joie Allen either side of an ace by redshirt junior Hayley Delor for a 13-10 lead. AB responded with three points of their own, but Frostburg answered right back with an 8-2 run that featured a drive to the floor by junior McKaily Thomson-Moran and pair of kills from both sophomore AJ Thompson and freshman Amanda Knieper for a 22-16 advantage. The Battlers got two straight points back, but Braun powered three of the final four points of the set to win it 25-19.

FSU raced out to an 8-3 lead in set two, using a balanced attack on kills coming from Thompson, Braun, Thomson-Moran, and Knieper. Alderson Broaddus dug in and scored four straight to get back within 8-7, but the Bobcats took four points of their own, with kills from Allen and Thompson, then punctuated by a Delor-Thompson block to go ahead 12-7. The Battlers still fought on, taking six of the next seven points to get within 14-13. From that point, Frostburg commanded the end of the set, scoring 11 of the final 12 points in dominating fashion. Braun recorded a trio of aces during the run, while Knieper added a pair of kills to win 25-14.

The Bobcats took their momentum into the third set with a quick 4-0 lead on another Delor-Thompson block, an ace by senior Bianca Smalls, and kills by Thompson and Braun. AB was determined to keep the match going, as they scored seven of eight points to take a 7-5 lead, which was eventually pushed to their largest lead of the night at 12-8. Frostburg got out of their slump and took charge of the set with an 8-1 lead, with Allen, Knieper, and Braun all getting kills and junior Jenna Gossard tacking on an ace for a 16-13 lead. The Battlers kept pushing and were able to work the score back to 20-18, but a late FSU run was enough to end the match, with kills by Braun, Allen, and Thomson-Moran taking the final frame 25-21.

Braun led all scorers with 15 kills, as Knieper recorded a career-high eight kills to lead the offense. Delor had a great all-round match, tallying 37 assists, two blocks, and a pair of aces. Sophomore Fiona Gonzalez Medina led the defensive effort with a match-high 16 digs, with Smalls and Gossard both adding eight each.

With the victory, Frostburg improves to 16-10 overall, while Alderson Broaddus falls to 6-14. The Bobcats are back on the court Friday, October 21 for a road match against Charleston (WV) at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
