FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State field hockey dropped an overtime contest at Slippery Rock Friday on Friday evening by a final score of 4-3.
Â
The Bobcats applied the first pressure of the game, being awarded a corner just over two minutes into the game. FSU took advantage of the set piece with an insert from senior Emily Hughes to sophomore Femke Hofkamp, who fed freshman Paige Leitzel to find the back of the cage.Â
Â
The Bobcats would take advantage of another corner late in the opening quarter, this time Hughes found the net on a nice deflection that went over the Rock's keeper to make the score 2-0 Frostburg.Â
Â
SRU took more control of the game in the second quarter, forcing FSU's defense to fend off five corners and seven shots to hold on to the lead. Slippery Rock finally breached Frostburg's goal four minutes before the end of the half to make things 2-1.
Â
The Rock continued their momentum into the third quarter, scoring inside six minutes to even the score at 2-2 and limiting the Bobcats to just a pair of shots.Â
Â
In the fourth quarter, SRU again scored early, taking a 3-2 lead within two minutes. As time winded down, FSU found an answer with just under three minutes left, as junior Ashlyn Cave scored her first goal of the season to take the game into overtime.Â
Â
Unfortunately for Frostburg, they wouldn't get a chance to win in the extra period, as Slippery Rock had the only shot, finding the back of the cage six minutes in for the 4-3 win.Â
Â
With the loss, FSU falls to 7-5 on the year, while Slippery Rock improves to 6-5. The Bobcats quickly return to action at home on Sunday, October 16 to face No. 1-ranked West Chester at 5 p.m. Information and udpates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.Â
